Regarding the controversy over Cha Eunwoo's additional tax assessment of 20 billion KRW, the civic group called the Korea Taxpayers Association announced they will report the tax officials and reporters who leaked his tax information.
On the 9th, the Korea Taxpayers Association announced, "At 11 AM tomorrow (10th), regarding the tax information related to Cha Eunwoo's tax audit that was leaked to the media, we plan to report the unidentified tax official who disclosed the tax information of Cha Eunwoo and also the journalist who reported it. We will file the report to the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency on charges of violating the Personal Information Protection Act and leaking official secrets under he Criminal Act."
Recently, it was reported that Cha Eunwoo underwent a strict, unscheduled tax audit by the Investigation Bureau 4 of the Seoul Regional Tax Office in July last year and was notified of an additional tax assessment totaling over 20 billion KRW. The National Tax Service determined that the company registered under his mother's name was used to route his income without providing real services. However, Cha Eunwoo's side has responded, saying that the company in question is a formally registered management business that carried out real business activities.
The Korea Taxpayers Association is a professional civic group that protects the rights of taxpayers. On the 29th of last month, they defended Cha Eunwoo in a press conference, saying, "Tax avoidance is a taxpayer's right. Criticizing someone as a tax evader simply because they were notified of additional tax assessment is looking at tax only from the government's perspective."
The association also pointed out, "Calling the company under his mother's name a 'paper company' goes against the rule that someone is innocent until proven guilty." They added, "This could create a bad image before the legal process is finished, which infringes the taxpayers' right."
Meanwhile, Cha Eunwoo's agency, Fantagio, stated, "The matters currently raised are at the stage where facts are being checked according to tax authority procedures. The agency and the artist are both fully cooperating with the investigation. Once the legal and administrative decisions are clear, we will responsibly take the necessary steps based on those results."

5. [+23][-0] Tax avoidance is an act of reducing tax burdens through methods not intended by the law. How is that a taxpayer's right? Are they saying there’s a right to do something illegal? Or are they saying it’s a separate issue from taking responsibility for breaking the law?
