Around 12.30 AM on July 10th, 2013, a teenage boy walked into the Yongin Police Station next to Youngin City Hall in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, and said something that sounded straight out of a horror movie.
S (Born in 1994), who was 19 years old at the time, confessed that on the night of the July 8th, he had murdered A (Born in 1996), whom he knew personally. He dismembered her body, dumped the parts down through the bathtub drain, and hid the remaining bones in a closet inside a container near his house in Cheoin-gu.
Startled, the police immediately mobilized the violent crimes unit, recovered the remains from S's home, sealed off the motel room (8XX) where the murder had taken place, and called in the forensic investigation team.
◇ He killed her because he thought she reported him for sexual assault ... Dissected the body over 16 hours
S calmly described the process of the crime as follows:
1. On the evening of the 7th, his friend, B, came to the cafe where he worked part-time in Bundang-gu, Seongnam. After finishing his shift, they watched a movie at a DVD room and played billiards until dawn.
2. They checked into a motel in Singal-dong at 5.30 AM to get some sleep and woke up around 2 PM.
3. At 2.30 PM, he texted A, 'What are you doing? Let's hangout.' A arrived at 3.30 PM and they watched TV together.
4. Around 4 PM, he told her he needed to go out briefly to get his conjunctivitis treated and left the motel.
5. Before going to the eye clinic, he stopped at a supermarket to buy a large industrial cutter knife and two small ones. He then went to the eye clinic and returned around 5 PM.
6. At 7.30 PM, after B left, S tried to sexually assault A. The attempt failed because she resisted fiercely.
7. At 7.50 PM, A sent a text message to someone. S thought she was reporting the attempted assault. He took her phone and strangled her to death.
8. At 9.00 PM, he sexually assaulted her body. Around 10 PM, he dragged her body into the bathroom, put it in hot bathwater, and began dissecting the body with the cutter knife.
9. He spent 16 hours, until 2 PM on the 9th, cutting out all her flesh. Then he went to a nearby supermarket to buy a large plastic bags used to store kimchi.
10. He put her skull and bones in the bags and hid them in a closet inside the container in the yard of his home in Cheoin-gu.

◇ Claimed the sexual intercourse was consensual ... Autopsy revealed necrophilia
At first, S stated that he had consensual sexual intercourse with A. However, the autopsy results revealed that the sexual intercourse happened post mortem. He confessed, saying, "I was angry that my attempt failed..."
According to Article 159 of the Criminal Act, sexual abuse of a corpse (Necrophilia) is punishable by up to 2 years in prison or a fine of up to 5 M KRW.
Additionally, mutilation of a corpse, as in this case, can result in up to 7 years in prison according to Article 161.
S committed nearly all possible crimes, including assault, necrophilia, mutilation, and abandonment of a body.
◇ Interest in anatomy since elementary school ... Removed nearly all flesh and organs from the victim.
S had shown an unusual interest in anatomy since his elementary school days. Having attended elementary school in Iran due to his father's job, S became very interested in dissecting animals and human bodies after dissecting a sheep's organs with a razor blade in biology class.
S, who frequently watched related vides and read anatomy books, dissected A's body systematically, stripping away all her flesh and organs, leaving only the skull and bones.
Police later recovered about 15 kg of bone remains, estimating that he had cut out nearly 30 kg of flesh.
◇ When the drain clogged with flesh and blood, he asked the motel for a plunger
While dismembering the body, the drain clogged with flesh and blood. S asked the motel staff to 'bring a plunger because the toilet is clogged.' When a staff offered to unclog it for him, he refused and said, 'I'll do it myself.'
◇ While dismembering the body, he texted his friend 'Working on it'
While dismembering the body, S texted his friend, saying 'I'm draining the blood now,' and 'I'm working on it.'
He also took photos of the dismembered body on the bathroom floor and sent them to B twice.
B thought the images were from the internet and replied, 'Stop messing around with photos you downloaded.'
After hiding the remains in the container, S texted him again, saying, 'I feel numb,' 'I'll have to fall asleep covered in the smell of blood today,' and 'I wanted to become a monster and today, I was one.'
◇ Victims was a gifted student with IQ 150, her parents reported her missing from Singapore
A had been living in Singapore with her parents, who worked in the trade business, but returned to South Korea because she struggled to adapt. She was living alone in Giheung-gu and preparing for her high school equivalency exam.
Her parents, who were proud of their daughter's intelligence, as she had an IQ of 150 and was a Mensa member, reported her missing on July 9 after they couldn't reach her past lunchtime.
Police discovered that she had gone to meet S after receiving his text. They planned to summon S as a witness on July 10 for questioning as a person of interest. However he appeared at the station earlier and his visit was processed as a voluntary appearance, not a surrender.
◇ Prosecutors demanded death penalty ... Only 3 teenagers have ever been sentenced to death
At the first trial held at the Suwon District Court on December 9, 2013, A's father cried out, "My daughter whom I loved more than life itself died so miserably. This is hell for me," and pleaded for the maximum sentence alowed by law.
Prosecutors also demanded the death penalty, stating that S had committed an unforgivable crime.
It was extremely rare for teenager to be sentenced to death in South Korea. Only three teenagers have ever received a death sentence in history.
◇ "As a first-time offender, he needs a chance at rehabilitation" ... Sentenced to life imprisonment instead
However, the court sentenced S to life imprisonment, stating, "Considering his young age of 19 and the fact that he is a first-time offender, he also shows some remorse. Therefore it is necessary to give him a chance for rehabilitation. Rather than to deprive him of his life, it is more appropriate to permanently isolate him from society." Along with the life sentence, the court also ordered his personal information to be disclosed for 10 years and for him to wear an electronic ankle monitor for 30 years.
Both appeals in 2014 (May and August) upheld the sentence.
As a result, S became the youngest life-sentenced prisoner in South Korea.
