Comedian Park Misun (58) has suspended all broadcasting activities to focus on her treatment after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.
According to The Fact, who confirmed with several acquaintance on the 22nd, Park Misun underwent a medical check-up earlier this year due to a health issue and was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer during the process.
A close acquaintance of Park Misun said, "Because it was detected early, the chances of a full recovery with just radiation and drug treatment are high, so there's no need to worry much. She is currently in a stable condition and is focusing on treatment and rest."
They also added, "Many of her close colleagues in the broadcasting industry already knew about her condition, but they remained silent because she didn't want it to be made public. Unfortunately, as all kinds of negative rumors spread, such as claims that she's suffering from a terminal or incurable disease, she decided to reveal it herself."
According to her acquaintances, Park Misun initially had a difficult time after her diagnosis. However, once she began receiving hospital treatment, she reassured those around her with a calm and composed mindset.
While most cancers fall into similar categories, early detection is absolutely critical for improving the prognosis of breast cancer. When found in stage 1, the 5-year survival rate is close to 98%.
Speculation grew when Park Misun suddenly halted all broadcasting activities at the beginning of the year. Curiosity only grew after her husband, Lee Bongwon, mentioned on MBC Radio Star this June, saying "She's receiving treatment and resting well. She's taking this opportunity to fully recharge.”
Previously, Park Misun had stepped down from a couple's variety program which was scheduled to film overseas with fellow comedians Choi Yangrak and Paeng Hyunsook, leaving her husband to participate alone. This led to a rapid spread of rumors about her health within the broadcasting industry.
Park Misun's agency, Cube Entertainment, had also announced that "Park Misun has entered a period of rest for health reasons," but did not disclose the specific diagnosis.
As colleagues in the entertainment industry and fans sent messages wishing for her speedy recovery, some even shed tears when mentioning her situation, which fueled the rumors of her health.
On August 18, comedian Jo Hyeryun expressed her gratitude toward Park Misun during her appearance on MBC radio’s '2 O’Clock Date with Ahn Youngmi,' saying, “People are curious about Misun Unnie’s condition, and I pray for her every single day.”
