[24.10.08] The head of the Military Research Institute: "Women joining the military could increase birth rates"

Kim Hyungchul, the head of the Military Research Institute under the Ministry of National Defense, said, "If women join the militaries, camaraderie will form, leading to higher marriage and birth rates."

Kim made this statement during an appearance on Pen and Mic TV's YouTube broadcast on the 23rd of last month. He said, "The situation has now come to the point where women need to serve in the military. Men and women will live together like in college dormitories, though of course, in separate rooms. Naturally, couples will form there too. This will create camaraderies that last for a lifetime, and I believe there could actually be more marriages and children born as a result."

Kim added, "I’ve heard that even during temple stays, couples form. Encouraging women to serve in the military could provide opportunities for men and women to meet, which is good in that respect, and in emergencies, they could also contribute to combat capabilities, which is another benefit."

In response to these remarks, Democratic Party lawmaker Park Sunwon criticized, saying, "Kim is using the military service as a tool for childbirth. His remarks are highly inappropriate," and urged the Minister of Defense, who appointed Kim, to apologize.

Kim later told SBS, "It was a lighthearted comment meant to highlight the need for opportunities for men and women to meet. If it was inappropriate, I apologize."

I came across this article from about a month ago. The remarks were so shocking that I had to share.

-That would only increase sexual crimes. They really see women as nothing more than tools for childbirth.

-He doesn't see women as humans; he sees women as sexual tools. F*ck.

-I don't know... Wouldn't this just lead to higher rates of crime and female suicide?

-I wonder what does he think women are?

-Does it even make sense to say camaraderie leads to marriage? By that logic, do all men in the military fall in love and marry each other?

-Bullsh*t.

-Ahjussi, why don't you go and give birth then?

-Is this person insane? How does anyone even begin to think that birth rates will rise because of military service?

-What does he think women are? Baby-making machines?

-Looks like he's including the number of pregnancies caused by rape in that calculation?

-I’m all for women serving in the military, but only if the units are completely separate, and there’s no interaction between men and women.

-Weren’t you guys saying women should just have babies instead of joining the military? But now you want us to do both?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-What is the purpose of the military anyway? To date and give birth?

-So you're talking about handing guns to women?!

-Brainless.

-So by his logic, are most soldiers gay now? Since he thinks camaraderie naturally leads to falling in love?

-Just figure out a way for men to give birth instead, please.

-And this is exactly why the birthrate is at rock bottom.
