Baekhyun Apologizes for Smoking Indoors in Macau: "Did Not Know About the Ban, Sorry for the Disappointment"

Baekhyun has issued an apology regarding the indoor smoking controversy.

On September 16, Baekhyun's agency, INB100, stated, "We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable about our artist Baekhyun smoking indoors."

The agency explained, "Baekhyun and our staff were completely unaware that electronic cigarettes were banned in Macau. During a meal with staff after his concert in Macau, the conversation became lively, and Baekhyun unconsciously used an electronic cigarette."

The statement continued, "Baekhyun deeply regrets disappointing many fans due to his careless behavior and sincerely apologizes. Both the agency and Baekhyun will be more cautious to ensure that such incidents do not happen again, and we promise not to disappoint our fans with similar situations in the future."

Previously, a video showing Baekhyun smoking indoors at what is presumed to be a restaurant spread online, causing controversy.

BTS' fandom, ARMY, experienced a divide over the issue. While some of them demand that 'Criminals should leave the group,' some argue, 'He shouldn't be placed on an excessive responsibility for an incident that caused no injuries.'

Most of BTS' international fans supported and cheered Suga, saying, 'It's time to support and cheer (for him),' since the police completed their investigation. By August 28th, various fan-funded support banners and truck ads that were prepared with donations via platforms like Paypal can be spotted just outside HYBE's headquarters building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Banner advertisements with supportive messages were installed on the streetlight in front of the building and trucks loaded with electronic signboards playing supportive messages were also spotted parked on the road in front of the headquarters building.

Korean fans who visited the site that is considered a pilgrimage for some, said, 'Suga leaving the group would make no sense.' Yoo (49) said, 'People say that Korean fans demand Suga to leave the group, but I have never personally seen anyone saying so in the fan gathering. I don't know where that opinions came from.' Kim (31) added, 'I know we should hold influential and famous people accountable for their moral responsibility, but don't politicians get to keep their positions even after DUI case? I don't want to say two wrongs make it right, but it's only fair that he takes responsibility in proportion to his actions.'

International fans, many of whom visited Korea inspired by their love for BTS, also came to HYBE's headquarters building. Martha Molinar (40, Mexico) said, 'I have been sightseeing in Korea for 10 days because I like BTS. I really like Korea, but I don't understand the heavy public opinion. I think it's time to forgive and cheer, rather than criticize and blaming.' A (33, Japan) commented, 'There’s a difference between being strict and being harsh. Korea might need a broader discussion on the ethical standards for its celebrities.'

Meanwhile, banners hanging on streetlights were removed on August 29th due to a lack of legal permission. A district official said, 'The legitimate procedure is to report to the district office first before hanging banners from the street lamps. It seems like the banners were installed without permission because foreign fans were not aware of the law here in Korea.' Megumi Suemura (50, Japan), one of the fans present, cheered when she managed to get one of the removed banners.

The other 4 members also mentioned that once their contracts with JYP end, they wouldn’t renew and would leave the company to reform DAY6 as a 5-member band with him.

(During this process, not only the fans but the members were also going through a tough time as they had just started their military service.)

According to industry reports on the 13th, 'Resident Playbook,' which was expected to air in the second half of the year, has been removed from the 2024 drama lineup. Some doubts whether it will be aired at all.

At a time when people are severely suffering great damage due to the strike, airing medical drama could face heavy backlash. 'Resident Playbook' is a drama about the dedication of doctors and medical residents towards their patients.

Regarding BTS Suga (real name Min Yoongi), who was booked for driving under the influence with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.227% on August 6, 2024, we, ARMYs calling for Suga’s withdrawal from BTS, strongly assert the following opinions to Suga and BigHit Music:

1. Suga and BigHit Music must not undermine the moral values of Korean society.

Suga's blood alcohol concentration of 0.227% is the highest among idols caught for drunk driving, nearly three times the 0.08% threshold for license revocation. If a BTS member, who influences fans worldwide, commits drunk driving, and the fandom defends this, it could dull society’s awareness of the dangers of drunk driving, causing significant harm.  

If a member who drove while heavily intoxicated continues activities without consequences due to the group's global popularity, it would set a dangerous precedent of evading responsibility. The group and the agency will inevitably face criticism for prioritizing "economic value" over the "moral values" of Korean society.  

2. Suga must take responsibility for deceiving fans and the public.

In his first apology, Suga referred to his electric scooter as an electric skateboard and claimed ignorance of the illegality of drunk driving. Furthermore, his second handwritten apology lacked an honest acknowledgment of his previous lies, offering only hollow words of responsibility, leaving fans deeply disappointed.  

Suga has been delivering positive messages and societal critiques through his music as a BTS member. However, by committing the criminal act of drunk driving, he has lost the sincerity behind his music and messages. This is a betrayal and deception to the many fans who have loved his music.  

As a Korean citizen, it is only right for Suga to face legal consequences for his crime. As a public figure and BTS member, he must also take responsibility for deceiving the public and fans through his reckless driving and false explanations, which have shattered trust in him as an artist.

3. BigHit Music has a responsibility to uphold the value of BTS as artists.

Korean society holds a highly negative perception of celebrities, especially idols, involved in drunk driving. Public broadcasters have long restricted the appearances of celebrities who commit various social crimes. To date, no member of a third-generation idol group who has caused controversy over drunk driving has remained in their group.  

If Suga remains in the group despite his drunk driving, BTS and ARMY’s mutual pride in facing the world with confidence will be significantly diminished.  

Therefore, we, ARMYs calling for Suga’s withdrawal from BTS, strongly demand the following from BigHit Music and Suga:

1. BigHit Music must release an official statement regarding Suga’s future group activities.  

2. Suga must take responsibility for this incident by immediately withdrawing from the group.

We will continue to take firm action until BigHit Music makes an official statement about Suga’s group activities and Suga withdraws from the group.
