Following President Yoon Sukyeol's emergency declaration of martial law, some countries have issued travel advisories for South Korea. However, an Indian media outlet reported that it was a great opportunity to travel to South Korea.
On the 5th, Indian media outlet 'Curly Tales' reported, "South Korea has strengthened their security in some areas, but there are no major restrictions on tourist activities. This current situation may actually provide unexpected benefits to travelers."
The report highlighted the exchange rate as a key factor in the appeal of domestic travel. It noted that the South Korean won has fallen to its lowest level against the US dollar in two years, this fluctuations in exchange rate could be an attractive opportunity for travelers in terms of cost.
According to the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate remained around the 1,380 KRW range around the US presidential election last month but surpassed the 1,410 KRW range after Donald Trump was confirmed as the US President-elect. Following President Yoon’s declaration of martial law on the 3rd, the exchange rate soared to the 1,440 KRW range.
However, the media advised, "Avoid politics-related rallies as much as possible, and check the latest travel advisories, including registering your travel details with your embassy."
Immediately after the martial law declaration on the 3rd, major countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan issued warnings urging their citizens residing in or visiting South Korea to be extra careful. In response, the South Korean government, concerned about potential losses from a decline in incoming tourists, sent diplomatic notes to embassies in these countries. The notes reportedly stated that martial law had been lifted through democratic procedures, public safety and order are being maintained, and there are no disruptions to tourism or economic activities.
