EJAE started her trainee life at the age of 11. She spent 12 years as a trainee at SM Ent. alongside groups like Super Junior, SNSD, SHINee, and f(x). She recalled, "I really worked hard," and shared that SNSD's Yuri once told her, "You're going to become something. You work so hard, you'll definitely succeed."
However, EJAE ultimately failed to debut. She explained, "I didn't fit SM Ent.'s style. The trend back then was a clean, clear sound. I tried to change my voice to sound clearer, but I wasn't that good at singing at the time. I was too old. I understand. I just missed the timing(to debut)."
After her contract was terminated, EJAE left SM Ent. She confessed, "I was really disappointed in myself." She revealed that it was painful for her to work hard without debuting.
