South Korean movie 'Exhuma' causes a sensation in North Korea

It has been reported that 'Exhuma' is gaining popularity in Hoeryong, North Korea. According to a report by Daily NK, news about 'Exhuma' is quickly spreading in the border areas through the Chinese mobile phones that the residents are using. The demand for 'Exhuma' has exploded, especially in border areas like Hoeryong.

In Hoeryong, 'Exhuma' is described to be a "thrilling movie about a shaman who discovers about a family's hereditary mysterious illness that is related to the their ancestrial burial site and goes through the process of relocating the grave to resolve the illness."

A source explained, "People here (in North Korea) also visit shamans and ask about their ancestors' graves when things are not going well or they are not getting well from an illness. This is due to the superstition that misfortune continues because of poor ancestral graves or improper ancestral rites, which is why people relate to and show interest in this film."

North Korea strictly prohibits superstitious activities, as specified in Article 256 of its Criminal Law. However, residents still heavily rely on superstition, consulting fortune tellers and following their advice despite knowing the risks of punishment. As a result, films with superstitious themes naturally attract residents' attention."

It feels like, aside from South Korea, North Koreans would relate the most to the theme of this movie out of everyone in the world.

-Watch it carefully... and later, let's bash Japan together ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

-The exorcism you guys need is to get rid of your dictatorial regime

-I've heard they secretly watch Korean dramas in North Korea, I wonder if they have shamans in secret too?

-Wow.. they would really love this movie.

-Seoul is great, come visit soon

-Watch it secretly and don't get caught ㅠㅠ

-Oh, I'm scared they'll get caught ㅠㅠ

-Watch it as secretly as possible and come over to South Korea. There are still many pro-Japanese here... Let's get rid of them together...

-They would probably find it really fun... Watch it secretly and carefullyㅠ

-Watch it carefully... don't get caught

-This shows we are really the same peopleㅜㅜ

-Kim Jongun's family probably watched it already

-They would probably understand this movie better than anyone else... Watch it carefully and have fun

-I'm curious about North Korean shamansㅋㅋㅋ

Plus, thanks to "Exhuma," it's widely known that the shape of South Korea resembles a tigerㅋㅋㅋ

-I really enjoyed 'Exhuma' and even watched it several times. I'm curious which parts of the movie resonated with people in these countries? I mean, it's so Korean... Maybe being Korean is universal?

-Wow... 'Exhuma' exceeded 3M viewers in Malaysia? That's crazyㅋㅋㅋ

-How did it get so many viewers in Malaysia?ㅋㅋㅋ

-It's making waves in Southeast Asia...

-This is amazing... Now, they should give us the sequel of 'Exhuma'

-It's fascinating how 'Exhuma' resonates well in Asia...ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Occultism is quite similar everywhere in Asia. We also share similar histories with Southeast Asian countries. Besides, they really like horror movies.

-I find it really fascinating how foreigners can empathize with this movie.

-It's both happy and sad that it's popular in Southeast Asia. Maybe they understand the sentiment of the movie because they too have been colonized?

-No way... I'm curious about the reviews.

-Director Jang should be locked up until he comes up with a prequel or sequel of 'Exhuma'

-The director must be sitting on a pile of money right now

-Wow, but unless you're Korean, you wouldn't understand the sentiment of this movieㅋㅋㅋ We might have similar histories with other Asian countries, but Australia...?ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-The director must be getting rich.

-I really wanted to see this movie, but I heard it's scary, so I couldn't watch it.ㅠㅠ It seems to be a hit even overseas, ㅠㅠ

-Overall, it's a really well-made movie. It's immersive, fun, and has a good message. And now, it's proven to resonate internationallyㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Malaysia also experienced Japanese colonizationㅠ

-Wow, no way... it's really amazing.

-Wow, this is incredible.

Holy Night: Demon Hunters

An occult movie starring Ma Dongseok

theqoo

-Ma Dongseok in an occult movie...??

-I'm more worried about the ghosts in the last movie

-I'm really looking forward to that occult movie starring Ma Dongseokㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Ma Dongseok is gonna beat the hell out of that ghost's ass

-Park Shinhyang filmed that movie in 2020, but they're only releasing it now. I'm half worried and half excited about that movie.

-I'm really looking forward to Devils Stay

-The genre of the last movie is Ma Dongseok, not occult

-The last one is an action movie, not occult...

-Whoa... I thought they were not going to release Devils Stay...

-I'm really curious about Park Shinhyang and Ma Dongseok's moviesㅋㅋㅋㅋ But since I'm a scaredy-cat, I don't think I can watch them

-The description of the last movie is really funny... The movie is basically about Ma Dongseok starring in it.

-I think Devils Stay and Holy Night are going to be good...! The rest just seem too scary for me...

"Who Would've Expected a 60-Year-Old Actor to Do This..." Choi Min-sik Excite the MZ Generation

"A fan personally knitted this scarf for me. So, even if it's choking me, I'll wear it. I'll gladly wear the headbands and scarves you've given me, despite the choking sensation."

Choi Min-sik doesn't shy away from showcasing his protruding belly as he does the hand hearts and flashes smile, as his fans had requested. The fan-services this 62-year-old actor recently did during the promotional events for the film 'Exhuma' have sparked reactions from the MZ Generation. The term 'Hal-ggu' (Grandfather Makeover) has been spreading like wildfire since then.

Choi Min-sik attended all 73 stage greetings with no exception until the 9th. During these events, he wore Kuromi, Kitty, Panda headbands, tangerine hats, and even bags made out of snacks created by fans, graciously. Since then, he has been gaining a lot of new nicknames such as 'Kuro-Minsik', 'Kitty-Minsik', 'Tangerine Min-sik', and more.

K-Netz commented, "Young actors should learn from him about fan service." A representative from Showbox stated, "While fan service used to be primarily focused on idol-turned-actors or younger stars, even middle-aged and senior actors don't hesitate doing it these days. Especially Choi Min-sik, who has been receiving an unusually large number of gifts."An official also analyzed, "If people hear good things about fan service, they tend to attend screenings even if they're not fans of the actors."

theqoo

-It's really adorable to see Ahjussis do fan-service to the fullest...

-Hal-gguㅋㅋㅋㅋ That's really cute

-I bet at least the movie gained 100,000 viewers more after Min-sik Ahjussi did that

-It seems like doing fan service really earns favor. Not only Choi Min-sik, but Timothee Chalamet also received good reactions after doing fan-services in Korea...

-Older actors used to secretly envy it when younger actors got those kinds of fan service requests. They seem to enjoy it when they get asked to do fan-service. Min-sikbao is so cuteㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-This is what it means to be a real man.

-He used to have a dignified image, but now he's become adorable.

-He used to have a serious image from always playing scary roles (at least to me), but lately, he's the cutest ㅠㅠ

-Because the actors themselves seem to enjoy it, the viewers find it entertaining too, and some people book movie tickets just to see that.  But seriously, it's just too cute ㅋㅋ

-Some actors used to act high and mighty at film festivals or press conferences, and it was really off-putting... So it's really nice to see a great actor like him actively showing a bright image.

-Seriously, he's an adorable manly man.

-He looks so happy that it makes me happy too ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-That's very nice to see... He's really cute

-Real men know how to be cute.

-He's already excellent at his job, and he's got aegyo too??? Please continue to do even better in the future!!!!

-It's creepy to see someone of my grandfather's age being requested to do such cute things.

-Hey guys, don't ruin the mood and go touch some grass.

Indonesians Reaction to K-Netz's Reaction about 'Exhuma' Doing Well in Indonesia

Q: Do Indonesians like horror movies?

A: Is that even a question?

ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

It's just like asking if Koreans like kimchi.

It seems like this Monday was a national holiday in Indonesia, that's why the number of viewers increased drastically.

I'm currently reading their reactions and it seems like Indonesian also has a lot of indigenous beliefs, I guess that's why 'Exhuma' resonates well with them. Some of them even compare it to their own folktales.

theqoo

-Ah... So it was really obvious that Indonesians are really into horror movies?ㅋㅋㅋ

-They love horror movies just as much as we love Kimchi??ㅋㅋㅋ I heard the same thing applies to Thais too

-They really love horror moviesㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-It was a national holiday?ㅋㅋㅋ No wonder why the number of viewers incrreased so quickly...

-I saw a Tweet saying, "Horror and shamanism, of course it'll do well in Indonesia. Please create more movies like this"ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Well, it's also the genre of movie we really like as well. Let's just hit 10M viewers first so that Director Jang can create more movies like this with no worriesㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-It seems like they're really into horror moviesㅋㅋㅋ That's fascinatingㅋㅋㅋ

-I clicked on the Tweet because I was curious... I learned that they have horror movies in their cinemas all year longㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-I looked up why 'Exhuma' is a big hit in Indonesia and learned that the market for horror movies there is really huge. Additionally, Indonesians also really love movies about spirits? ghosts? that passed down through tradition. That's the information I could gather from a 10-minutes long video. I also read dozens of comments that seemed like translations from Indonesian reviews, they all thanked this movie for showing such a pretty and handsome shamansㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Oh... I really want to watch an Indonesian horror movie one dayㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-South East Asians really love movies like thisㅋㅋㅋ

'Exhuma' Surpasses 1.3M Viewers in indonesia

theqoo

-Hul... I just saw a post celebrating 1.2M viewers in Indonesia, though...?

-What?? I just congratulated them for surpassing 1.2M viewers a while ago...? Hul...

-?? I just saw a post that they surpassed 1.2M viewers like 10 minutes ago?? Wow~

-Didn't they just hit 1.2M viewers??ㅋㅋㅋ I really want to hear Indonesians impression about this movie. What points did they find interesting?

-Hul... Congratulations! Let's go for 2M viewers

-Yes?? Already?? They just reached 1.2M viewers recently...?

-Just how many thousands of people watch this movie every day in Indonesia?ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-100,000 viewers in such a short time?? Impressive

-I hope it will surpass 2M viewers soon!!

-They keep breaking records...

-When it reached over 1M viewers, I asked Korean and local YouTubers living in Indonesia about their reactions to 'Exhuma.' They said that because the population is so large, hitting 1M viewers isn't that big of a deal. However, they mentioned that among Korean enthusiasts in their circle, some watched it twice.
ㄴIndonesia has a relatively small number of moviegoers. They mentioned that the highest record for an Indonesian domestic film was around 7M views.

-It's unique how they use '.' instead of ',' in between the numbers... Anyway, it's really fascinating how this movie is doing well in Indonesia

-That's really fast...

theqoo

-That's really amazing??

-What's going on...

-Whoa... It's doing really well in Indonesia

-It seems there's something in the movie that resonates with Indonesians. It's great that it's doing well!ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Thank you, Indonesian Unniesㅎㅎ

-If you look up 'Exhuma' in Tiktok, they're all Indonesians...

-It's Monday today and yet it gained a lot of viewers...

-Whoa... Looks like around 100,000 to 200,000 people watch this every day...

-Hulㅋㅋㅋㅋ Is there something in this movie that resonates with them??

-Wow, that's amazing... Do they like horror movies?

-The caption in that picture says '1,200,000 people are caught in a dilemma of whether to open the door or the window'

-Whoa... I'm really curious about their review about this movie

-I heard Indonesians are really interested in shamanism...

-Southeast Asia shows great interest in shamanism, and Thailand is also strong in this area. Indonesia shares the experience of Japanese invasion during World War II, especially in the Pacific War.

-That's twice of the number of viewers Parasite achievedㄷㄷ

-Do they also have ancestral numerology? It's interesting that they understand this movieㅋㅋㅋ

-I heard Indonesians really enjoy horror moviesㅋㅋㅋ Most of their blockbusters are horror movies

-Do they have funeral customs or rites like ours? They probably do, but I wonder if the meaning was translated well?

-Bali happens to be celebrating Nyepi today...perfect timing for preparing these things like festivals.

-I'm endlessly grateful for the high consumption of Korean content...

-Indonesia is an Islamic country, but do they understand concepts like numerology?

-If more viewers show up, it would be fun if the director and actors did a stage greeting in Indonesiaㅋㅋㅋ

-Wow, impressive! I'm so curious about what aspect of our culture is similar to Indonesia's?! So curious!

-Even in Muslim countries, the concept of shamans seems okay.

Chinese Viewers Fussing Over the Chinese Characters Written on People's Faces in 'Exhuma'

Seems like they're regarding it as illegal and making a big deal out of it. Hanja characters =/= Chinese characters

What do they expect us to do?? In South Korea, behaving like you (only thinking about your own culture and boasting about it) is considered very insulting and disgraceful behavior.

theqoo

-It's not insulting in South Korea. Why are they telling us what to do??

-So what? Who asked for your opinion?

-What's written on their faces is not Chinese characters. Stop creating a fuss about other countries' matters. Why should we pay attention to Chinese culture when it's a Korean movie?

-So what...? This is not a Chinese movie. You must be kidding me.

-I seriously don't know what's the problem with themㅋㅋ Seems like they just want to start a fight...

-So what...? Are they watching 'Exhuma' illegally???

-Why does it matter to us if it's insulting or not in your country?? Those are Hanja characters...ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Many countries use the alphabet for their own language writing, but it doesn't mean they're all English.

-I don't care if it's considered insulting or not in their countryㅋㅋㅋㅋ This is a Korean movie, you know??

-So pathetic...

-In South Korea, watching movies illegally is very disrespectful...

-They're being so narrow-minded, thinking that Hanja belongs only to them, idiots. Pay to watch the movie, you pathetic losers.

-Not Chinese people saying that when they're the ones who slap nonsense Korean words on their products to make them look Korean. We've been using Hanja for thousands of years in our own way, not Chinese.

-They're blabbering, and within a few years, there will definitely be a knockoff movie or drama with Hanja written on faces.

-What do you mean? It's not insulting in Korea.

-Wow, it seems like it's really going to hit 10 million, and it's going faster than expected.

theqoo

-Wow... Did it just gain 100,000 viewers in just one day?? Didn't they just reach 800K viewers yesterday?ㅋㅋㅋ That's really amazing.

-Wow... The numbers of viewers of the other movies are even more astonishing...

-Wow... I'm really curious about "Agak Laen". The number of the viewers are way off compared to other movies.

-8.2M viewers for the movie that ranks 1st??

-Why?? What makes 'Exhuma' so popular in Indonesia?
ㄴA very well-known Indonesian director recommended the movie and they also have a history of Japanese colony. Besides, Indonesians generally love horror movies. I guess that's why it gains popularity in Indonesia.

-There's a huge gap between the number of viewers for the movie that ranks 1st and 2nd. I wonder if the one that ranks 1st is interesting.

-I'm sure they just reached 800K or 900K viewers yesterday...ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-https://www.pagi.co.id/bbs/board.php?bo_table=contribution&wr_id=141 There's a Korean review about the movie that ranks 1st

-I wonder what the movie that ranks 1st is about...

-I'm really curious about the movie that ranks 1st because the number of viewers is so high compared to others...

-Looks like Indonesians really love horrorㅋㅋㅋ The movie that ranks 1st is a horror-comedy, while the ones that rank 3rd to 5th are horror.

-Wow, Southeast Asians seem to be really interested in shamanism, that's why 'Exhuma' is really popular thereㅋㅋㅋ Jang Jaehyun, hurry up and give us 'Exhuma 2'!!

-Synopsis of the 1st place movie: Four friends guarding a haunted house at a night market in pursuit of their dream to change their destiny, search for new ways to scare visitors so they can avoid bankruptcy. Unfortunately, due to the efforts of Bene, Jegel, Boris, and Oki, one of the visitors dies. Shocked, they bury the victim in the haunted house. Unexpectedly, the ghost of the victim wanders around, making the haunted house even scarier and crowded with visitors. As the police begin to investigate, they have no choice but to embark on all sorts of ridiculous conspiracies to cover up the real incident. What will happen to them next? It's a horror-comedy, so it seems interesting.

-Indonesians seem to not watch their own movies despite having a large population...

-Do they understand what 'Exhuma' is about?

-I wonder if they understand the movie... I don't mean to look down on them, it's just that 'Exhuma' has a historical/folk background they might not understand...

-'Exhuma' broke the record that 'Parasite' was holding and became the most-viewed Korean movie in Indonesia...

-It's really fascinating how horror movies are extremely popular in Indonesia. Is it like a national genre in Indonesia? Just like how anime dominates Japan? Do they enjoy watching scary movies because the weather is hot there?

-Indonesia has a large population, but it's famous for having movie ticket prices extremely high compared to the national income of its citizens. Unfortunately, even though the number of screens has increased significantly due to foreign investments compared to the past. It's a country where horror and action movies have always been popular in, that's why it looks like they enjoy 'Exhuma'ㅋㅋㅋ

-That's fascinating. I'm really curious about their reaction...

-It's amazing how the movie that ranks 1st already surpassed 8M viewers. It's only March...

-I live in Indonesia and watched 'Exhuma' on the day it premiered in Indonesia. There were a lot of people who came to watch 'Exhuma'! When I booked my ticket, I saw that the entire cinema was fully packed.

-Here in Indonesia, it's a horror paradise. I was waiting for a movie alone in the theater, and horror movies kept coming out in the trailers. It was so scary that I turned off my phone. I'm also planning to watch "Exhuma" this week! Usually, Korean movies are only released in CGV theaters, but "Paranormal Activity" is also being released in XXI theaters.

-Wow, looking at it like this, I understand why K-pop album sales have increased so much. Anyway, it feels good to have a positive response even from abroad.

-I'm from Malaysia, and here they showed it slightly in advance (?) like a pre-release screening, so I just watched it yesterday! Except for me and my friends, everyone else was local people and they enjoyed the movie!ㅋㅋ

-Indonesia is near the equator, so it's humid and has jungles, which leads to many natural disasters and large animals like tigers and crocodiles. Perhaps that's why there have been quite a few old tales and legends passed down, so maybe the theme resonated well.

Lee Hwarim (Kim Goeun)'s Chanting Scene in 'Exhuma'

Jang Jaehyun (Director): Kim Go-eun is a truly remarkable actress. During the filming, I felt that somehow she manages to capture the essence of what shamans do, whether it's bending the tone or making her voice huskier. She really nailed even the small details. Seeing her commitment, I thought, "Ah, she's definitely a veteran!"

-Her articulation is really good...

-Wow... This makes me want to watch the movie againㅠㅠ

-Her husky voice in that scene is seriously so cool.

-That shaman ritual scene is seriously so goodㅠㅠㅠ It gives me chills...

-I watched this movie twice because I wanted to see that shaman ritual scene againㅠㅠㅠ

-I watched this movie twice because I truly loved her performance here

-Is he holding a mic or a harmonica?

-She really does sound like a shaman in that scene. It's very impressive.

-I loved this part so much, I wanted to see it again.

-I heard she kept re-doing this scene until she felt it was right. She absolutely nailed this scene. Her articulation, vocalization, and acting were all great. She's such a great actress.

-She sounds like someone who knows how to sing. She sounds really amazing.

-It would be great if they released that chant as part of the original soundtrackㅜㅜ

-She suits Lee Hwarim's role perfectlyㅠㅠ I want to watch that scene again.

-This scene is so good that it gives me goosebumps...

-I can't get this scene out of my head...

-I watched this movie with my parents and they couldn't stop praising Kim Goeun.

-This scene is one of the reasons why I came back to the cinema to watch this movie for the second time.

-This part is absolutely my favoriteㅠㅠ I'm totally into Kim Goeun after watching it.

The Japanese Ghost in 'Exhuma', Kim Byung-oh "220cm Tall Actor... Not CG"

The identity of the extremely vile character in the movie turned out to be actor Kim Byung-oh, a former basketball player. Making a shocking impression in the latter part of the movie 'Exhuma,' he boasts an overwhelming presence as tall as his 220cm stature.

His appearance is said to be contributing to the success of the film. The movie 'Exhuma,' released on the 22nd of last month (directed by Jang Jae-hyun), surpassed 7 million viewers in just 16 days (as of March 8). It has become the highest-grossing occult genre film in Korea, surpassing director Na Hong-jin's 'The Wailing' (6.87 million viewers).

Kim Byung-oh laughed, saying, "These days, my friends are sending me a lot of messages saying, 'Let's eat sweetfish.'"

"People around me often call me the '6 million actor' or '7 million actor,' but it's quite embarrassing. It's a bit awkward to be called an actor, but I feel good when I hear that people enjoyed the movie. Just the day before yesterday, I was eating sashimi when my friend said, 'Shouldn't you eat sweetfish?"

The scene where he emerges from the grave and chews on a sweetfish is what made Kim Byung-oh's portrayal of the Japanese ghost in the movie even more eerie.

"The sweetfish that came out of the ground and was squeezed by hand was actually alive. It had a strong smell. However, the sweetfish that I chewed on was actually jelly prepared by the art team."

In fact, Kim Byung-oh's presence symbolizes the 'realism within unreality' that director Jang Jae-hyun portrays. By filling in things that can be expressed with CG with actual objects, it added a sense of weight to the viewing experience. Kim Byung-oh mentioned, "When I was cast, I thought, 'Why do they need me? It could be done with CG,'"

"'Avatar' and similar movies have CG that can make small people look like they're 3m to 4m in size, right? So, when I was cast, I wondered why I was needed. However, as I watched the movie, I understood. Ah! This is it! It took 6 hours to put on makeup on my hands, feet, and face, and 2 hours to remove it. That's how much effort was put into the direction."

Director Jang Jae-hyun cast Kim Byung-oh, a former basketball player who holds the title of second tallest person in Korea, to actually realize the charismatic 'vile' tall figure. The goblin fire that appears with the Japanese ghost in the latter part of the film was also not CG but an actual object.

"That goblin fire was real too. It was something big hanging on a crane and spinning around, and the cold set became warmer."

'Exhuma' received heated attention with the passionate performances of actors such as Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin, and Lee Do-hyun. The behind-the-scenes stories with them are also interesting. Kim Byung-oh said, "Watching the actors' performances gave me goosebumps."

"There is a scene where I approach menacingly and Kim Go-eun starts to tremble and sob, but as soon as we said 'action,' she suddenly immersed herself in the scene, and it gave me chills. I thought, 'It's cool, I want to try acting too.'"

Senior actors Choi Min-sik and Yoo Hae-jin treated rookie actor Kim Byung-oh with warm consideration.

"It was tough to act barefoot and barehanded on a cold day in the mountains, and Choi Min-sik even brought me a portable heater, and Yoo Hae-jin came to me alone, spoke to me warmly, and took care of me so that I could feel comfortable on set."

-Hul... So the fire was real

-So it was a former basketball player who turned into an actor...

-He must be bigger than a door

-It's even more surprising that the fire ball was real...

-220cm...??? Really...?

-The friends who told him to eat sweetfish are so meanㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-It must've been really hard for him to act barefoot in such weatherㅠㅠ

-The character also used two different voice actors. One Japanese voice actor for the Japanese lines and one Korean voice actor for the monster noises.

-The body was Kim Byung-oh's, the face was Kim Minjoon's, and the voice was Morita Takayama's. He's a famous Japanese actor who starred in Detective Conan.

-Both the article and the comments here are really informativeㅋㅋㅋ

-It was filmed in the middle of winter and he acted barefootedㅠㅠ It must've been toughㅠㅠ

-It didn't look like CG anyway...

-He worked so hard... It's a relief that the movie turned out really well.

-It was actually jelly? That's cuteㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-I naturally thought he was a CG... I didn't expect him to be a real human...
