Korean fashion magazine W Korea is facing criticism over their recent charity event. However, the magazine still hasn't issued any statement. On the evening of the 15th, the magazine held a breast cancer awareness campaign at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno, Seoul, attended by numerous celebrities and influencers.
W Korea held the 'Love Your W' charity event to raise awareness of breast cancer risks and support prevention and treatment. However, the actual event was criticized for lacking meaningful awareness messages and issues regarding the transparency around how donated funds were used.
W Korea has annually promoted the event as the 'largest charity event in South Korea.' However, the actual donations were surprisingly low compared to the glamorous event. The magazine reported to have donated about 1.1 billion KRW over the past 20 years. In contrasts, the Korea Breast Cancer Foundation's 'Pink Run,' has donated about 4.2 billion KRW over the past 24 years, which is about 4 times the amount W Korea donated.
Even the details of how donations were spent have not been transparently disclosed. All the magazine stated was that they provided breast cancer screening for about 500 people. It is reported that this year, fashion brands contributed around 30 million KRW each and jewelry brands around 5 million KRW each. With 29 participating brands, estimate suggests the total donations should near 1 billion KRW, yet records show annual donations around only 50 million KRW, leading to questions are being raised about the remaining funds.
Despite raising billions of KRW under the banners of 'charity' and 'breast cancer awareness' and using celebrities to attract donations, W Korea had not prompted any official statement regarding the series of controversies. A representative of the event told reporters, "We have nothing to say regarding the event and we haven't been contacted separately since the controversy," declining further comment.
-Wow... How shameless.
-"Raising awareness of breast cancer risks and support prevention and treatment"?????? When did that actually happen?? All they did was promote luxury brands.
-They've been running this event for over 10 years, but only 500 people? And that was for screening, not treatment?ㅋ That's basically just health checkups for their own staff.
-We should report this to the police.
-Are they using breast cancer to get money from brands and use celebrities for free PR?? And this has been going on for 20 years??
-Let’s report this to the authorities and have it investigated.
-Let's investigate and audit them. Then maybe they'll start talking.
-Who and where should we file a complaint about this?
-They'll definitely never apologizeㅋㅋ
-Reveal where all the donations went to.
-Investigate them.
-Shut them down.
-So cowardly.
-Disclose the donations transparently. This is suspicious. We should report them.
