K-Drama guilty pleasures that are surprisingly successful globally

Dramas that ranked 1st and 2nd on Netflix globally

1. Business Proposal

2. King the Land

When the Phone Rings

Business Proposal is high quality compared to others of that genre, while the other two are insanely guilty pleasures.

It means a drama that you watch secretly, but turns out to be a huge hit.

'If a dead body shows up, then call me.'

'Don't let your emotions get involved between us.'

'Do you want to take it off yourself, or shall I do it for you?'

'Tell me. How can I hate you? How can I stop loving you?'

-I can't watch Korean dramas because of the dialogues... It drives me crazy...ㅜ

-One of the most popular Korean dramas overseas is Boys Over Flowersㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Dramas that resonate with real-life situations are surprisingly less popular.

-I guess cheesy, childish stuff works well.

-I like it because I can watch without thinking too muchㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-When the Phone Rings is actually not that cringey for me.

-I didn't know I liked dramas like When the Phone Ringsㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-I've watched them all, but When the Phone Rings was the most cringey for me.

-When the Phone Rings is so funㅋㅋㅋㅋ I'm watching it because the two lead characters have good chemistry.

-When the Phone Rings is fun, you should watch itㅋㅋㅋ The final episodes are going to be aired this week.

-It's a genre I can't watch...ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Seeing the subtitles makes my whole body cringe.

-I've tried watching all these dramas but I just... can'tㅋㅋ Well, I'm really grateful that people watch K-Dramas a lot.

-Reading the subtitle of When the Phone Rings is driving me insaneㅌㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-I definitely can't watch this type of drama...

-Foreigners have good taste. It's really fun

Three highly anticipated Netflix blockbusters in 2025

theqoo

-Hul.... Is Squid Game really that big? I guess it's just me and my circle who haven't watched it.

-It surprised me that Wednesday made it to this listㅋㅋㅋ

-Not my cup of tea, but I'm happy Squid Game is doing well. I hope it becomes even more successful.

-I’m looking forward to Wednesday.

-I've tried watching Stranger Things so many times but failedㅠㅜㅜ

-I've watched Squid Game, but even if I haven't, I feel like I'd still know how big it is because people kept asking me if I've watched it...

-When is Stranger Things coming out? I'm so excited for itㅠㅠ

-I’m literally counting down to 2025 because of Stranger Things 5. Finally...

-I'm really looking forward to Wednesday and Stranger Things. I'll also watch Squid Game 3 if it comes out.

-I didn’t really like Stranger Things, though.

-I don't know how many times I've watched the first episode of season 1 of Stranger Things.

-I can't wait to watch Wednesday and Stranger Things.

-Squid Game is the most fun among those three seriesㅋㅋㅋㅋ I haven't watched season 2 yet, though.

-Squid Game is the only one I haven’t watchedㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I can't wait to watch Stranger Things.

-I haven't watched any of them.

Which Netflix's original drama generated more buzz?

A. Kingdom

Season 1 - Released January 25, 2019

Season 2 - Released March 13, 2020

B. The Glory

Part 1 - Released December 30, 2022

Part 2 - Released March 10, 2023

+

Although the timing of the two dramas is different, apart from the unbeatable Squid Game, I think Kingdom and The Glory are the two top contenders for second place.

Both dramas received positive reactions domestically and internationally.

Kingdom brought in a lot of new Netflix subscribers and The Glory generated buzz for bringing up social issues and having iconic lines.

Though they aired at different times, they seem to have a similar vibe.

++

Some argue that comparing Kingdom, one of Netflix's early hits, to The Glory, which came out after Squid Game became a global phenomenon is fair. But the fact that many people subscribed to Netflix just to watch Kingdom means that it was incredibly popular at the time. It was impossible not to hear people around you talk about Kingdom.

theqoo

-Even though I discovered Netflix because of Kingdom, it's The Glory...

-I subscribed to Netflix to watch Kingdom. The Glory is not interesting enough for me to watch.

-Even though The Glory seems more popular in South Korea... Kingdom is more globally known, I guess?

-For me, it's Kingdom. But if we're talking about the viewers' responses, it's The Glory.

-I haven’t watched either, but the people around me talk about The Glory more.

-Personally, it's Kingdom for me. But the answer here is obviously The Glory.

-I heard more about The Glory, but I enjoyed Kingdom more.

-Huh? Isn't it obviously The Glory? Aren't there a lot of people who haven't watched Kingdom?

-I like Kingdom better, but The Glory seems to have generated more buzz.

-The Glory. I haven't watched Kingdom.

-Was Kingdom really that popular? I personally like Kingdom more, but it felt more like word-of-mouth kind of buzz, while The Glory was something everyone was talking about.

-I first heard about Netflix because of Kingdom, but I didn’t watch it since zombie genres aren’t my thing.

-Kingdom was the reason Netflix became popular in Korea, so it's hard to compare.

-I subscribed to Netflix because of Kingdom.

The drama set in the Blue House

Designated Survivor: 60 Days.

The production team recreated the actual Blue House almost identically with sets and props.

Set in the Blue House, Ji Jinhee plays the role of the acting president.

And of course, whenever this drama is discussed, Lee Junhyuk's uniform and visuals are a must-mention.

Adding Son Sukku because he's also being mentioned in the comment section.

+ Adding picture and gifs from comment #10

-Son Sukku left such a strong impressionㅋㅋ

-I recently started watching this drama, bI've been so busy lately so I had to stop... Once I have time, I’ll definitely catch upㅠㅠ It's so fun.

-Honestly, if you haven’t watched this yet, I'm so f*cking jealous of you. - from someone who's watching this for the 6th time now.

-It has a great storyline and stunning visualsㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-Designated Survivor was the first drama I re-watched in 2024... And now I want to watch it again in 2025 because of the state of our country now...

-Seriously, it’s so good. Please watch it.

-Both the original and the remake are really good.

-What kind of role does Lee Junhyuk play? Is he the villain?

-Will there ever be a Season 2...? I loved it so much.

-Is it good? Will it stress me out? Should I watch it...?

-It’s so good, I need to rewatch it.

-Park Mujin should just become president already.

-A president like Ji Jinhee would be amazing.

-The drama is really well-made. If you haven't watched it, please do, it's fun.

-Absolute masterpiece, my dopamine surged since the first episode.

This actor's personal color is the Blue House

The human version of the Blue House

theqoo

-I thought it would be Ji Jinhee. Yoo Yeonseok doesn’t fit the Blue House image.

-I can’t relate to this.

-Yoo Yeonseok perfectly fits his role as a spokesperson in this drama.

-No...ㅠㅠ

-I came in thinking of Ji Jinhee or Lee Junhyuk.

-All the actors from 'Designated Survivor' look like they're actually part of the Blue House.

-Why did I think of SHINee’s Minho?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-What role does he play that people think he fits the Blue House? Is it a movie?

-He’s too sharp and handsome for the Blue House.

-Celebrities are just... celebrities...

-His face doesn’t say 'civil servant'... All I think about whenever I see him is how much he resembles EXO's Sehun.

-I'm enjoying the drama, but I feel sorry that he's getting unnecessary hate because of this post.

-I thought of Ji Jinhee. Baek Saeon belongs in the Presidential Office.

-I guess it's time for me to rewatch 'Designated Survivor.'

-If we're talking about the Blue House, it's Ji Jinhee or Lee Junhyuk. Yoon Yeonseok fits the Presidential Office more.

HYBE to launch two new girl groups this year

Although SEVENTEEN members like Jeonghan, Hoshi, Wonwoo, and Woozi will soon begin their military service, HYBE plans to fill the gap with unit and solo activities. As TXT, ENHYPEN, BOYNEXTDOOR, TWS, LE SSERAFIM, and ILLIT continue to grow steadily, HYBE will launch two new rookie groups, one under Source Music and the other under Pledis Ent. With this, HYBE will become the largest company with the most active artists among domestic agencies.

theqoo

-It's not even officially announced yet.

-They seem desperateㅋㅋ

-Are they a factory or what?

-It's giving K-pop factory.

-Why launch more girl groups?ㅋㅋㅋ Just manage the current ones properly.

-Didn’t they say they wouldn’t launch any groups for awhile after launching ILLIT? Did I see wrong?

-They can just copy other groups with the money they have. So launching new groups is an easy thing for them.

-I wonder which group they're going to copy this time.

-Crazy bastard.

-If we’re talking about girlgroups (excluding NewJeans, who left), they debuted LE SSERAFIM in 2022, didn't debut any groups in 2023, then ILLIT and KATSEYE in 2024. Now two more in 2025 from Source Music and Pledis? Even if they claim to have separate labels, the gaps are too short, and as last year’s leaks showed, the labels aren’t even truly independent. Can they handle this?

-A girl group from Pledis? Really?

-It’s easy to make groups quickly when talent doesn’t matter.

-A prime example of a company with no capability but plenty of money.

-It's a factory. If one group flops, they'll just discard them and make a new one.

-Their image is completely ruined now. Do they seriously think it'll work?

'Squid Game 2' Director didn't expect T.O.P to stir controversy with his poor acting skills: 'It must've taken courage for him. I'm satisfied'

https://m.entertain.naver.com/now/article/609/0000938014

'Squid Game 2' Director Hwang Donghyuk revealed his thoughts on casting T.O.P (Choi Seunghyun) in an interview with an international media outlet.

On December 28th, the American entertainment media outlet People released an interview with Hwang Donghyuk, the director of 'Squid Game 2. 'It was confirmed that this interview was conducted before the release of 'Squid Game 2.'In the interview, Director Hwang mentioned the reasons why casting T.O.P became controversial and commented on his acting skills.

Director Hwang began by saying, "As you know, Choi Seunghyun was involved in a marijuana scandal about 9 years ago in South Korea, which made him unable to take on any projects in Korea. 'Squid Game 2' is his comeback work after a long break."

He continued, "In particular, he plays a character who is a rapper and a drug user. I believe it took a lot of courage for him to take on this role. The character shares many negative similarities with him, so I think it must've taken a lot of courage for him to take on that role."

Director Hwang added, "Even after a long break, as a director, I was very impressed with his acting and I am very satisfied with his portrayal of the character."

T.O.P was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a 2-year probation for smoking marijuana in 2017, after which he left BIGBANG and paused his acting career. At the time, he had stated that he had no plans to return to the entertainment industry, but then he announced his return through the globally anticipated 'Squid Game 2,' causing controversy.

The public reaction to the news of T.O.P's casting was cold. However, Director Hwang expressed confidence, saying, "I've come to the conclusion that the only way to show why this actor had to be in this role was to present the result to the journalists and viewers. That's why I decided to proceed with the casting."

However, even after the release of the show, T.O.P failed to receive a positive response from viewers. There has been a mixed reaction, with many criticizing his exaggerated gestures, pronunciation, and the outdated portrayal of a rapper character.

theqoo

-You two look great together❤️

-It's been a long time since I've seen such shockingly bad acting. His acting skill is just so bad that it's unpleasant to watch.

-What kind of relationship do they have?

-It seems like they're dating....

-Why use an actor who can't act when there are so many talented actors who don't do drugs? No wonder people are criticizing.

-What, are they in love or what?

-They look alike

-They’re either dating or out of their minds

-I was like 'What the f*ck? Are they dating or what?!' as I scrolled down this post and seeing people having exactly the same thoughts as me in the comment section is both funny and frustratingㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

-I hate it.

-Did the director owe T.O.P money or something? What's wrong with him?

-Every time T.O.P comes on screen, it gets so cringey that I can’t focusㅠㅠㅠ

-If he’s satisfied with that, it seems like there’s a problem with him as a director.

-I get annoyed just by looking at him.

-Director... Director. I really enjoyed watching 'Squid Game', but I can't defend this...
